A profile of George Washington framed by ribbons and leafy branches was created by A. W. Jones, a sculptor from New York. It hangs in the visitor center at
Ferry Farm which was Washington's boyhood home. A small plate next to the relief reads:
George Washington Plaque
Signed A. W. Jones
New York
Patented 1858
This plaque, with profile bust of GW within a rococo revival
frame of ribbons and foliage, is signed on the reverse "A.W.
Jones, Sculp. NY," and was patented in 1858. That year
marks the 100th anniversary of when GW left the army after
the French campaign on the frontier and returned to Mount
Vernon. 1858 is also the year that the Mount Vernon Ladies'
Association began restoring Mount Vernon. It is likely that
the plaque was intended to commemorate these events.
The coordinates are at the front entrance of the visitor center.
