One of our favourite places to watch the waves rolling in is the Maori Bay carpark overlooking the Tasman Sea on Auckland's West Coast. A popular surfing spot on the weekends.

Maori Bay, near Muriwai Beach in West Coast Auckland, is an exposed beach break that has dependable surf and can work at any time of the year. The best wind direction is from the east with some shelter here from east winds. The bay tends to receive a mix of groundswells and windswells and the best swell direction is from the southwest. The beach breaks offer lefts and rights. Best around mid tide when the tide is rising.
Take care of dangerous rips, rocks and sharks. There is no lifeguard present at this beach so beware of swimming here. If you're not a surfer, it's probably best to stick to wave-watching from the shore! The carpark above the beach gives an excellent viewing point.
