Südlich des ehemaligen Fischerdörfchens El Golfo befindet sich eine der bekanntesten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Insel Lanzarote. Es ist der teilweise im Meer versunkene Krater des Vulkans Montaña de Golfo, in dem sich eine Lagune gebildet hat, die etwa 50 Meter von der Küste entfernt liegt. Die markante grüne Farbe der Lagune entsteht durch einzellige Algen, die den recht hohen Salzgehalt des Sees noch ertragen. Durch unterirdische Verbindungen zum Meer strömt Meerwasser in die Lagune nach und sorgt für ständigen Ausgleich. Dieses Gleichgewicht der Natur ist seit einigen Jahren aus unbekannten Gründen gestört. Die inzwischen abgesperrte grüne Lagune verdunstet immer mehr und besitzt heute nur noch einen Bruchteil ihrer ursprünglichen Größe. Der Name des Kratersees, Charco de los Clicos, stammt von einer essbaren Art Meeresfrüchten, den Clicos, die früher gehäuft an diesem Ort vorkamen.
Der Vulkankrater ist ein seltenes Beispiel des Hydrovulkanismus, der meistens an der Küste vorkommt. Beim Zusammentreffen von Magma und Wasser entsteht durch eine phreatomagmatische Explosion ein Tuffring wie er hier zu sehen ist.
In der Umgebung des Kraters kann man Olivin finden, ein aus dem Erdmantel stammendes Mineral, aus dem man Schmucksteine herstellen kann. Deshalb wird der Olivin auch als Halbedelstein bezeichnet.

South of the former fishing village of El Golfo is one of the major attractions of the island of Lanzarote. It is the partially submerged in the sea crater of the volcano, Montaña de Golfo, which has formed a lagoon, which lies about 50 meters away from the coast. The distinctive green color of the lagoon caused by single-celled algae, which bear the relatively high salinity of the lake yet. Through underground connections to the sea after sea water flows into the lagoon and provides constant compensation. This balance of nature is disturbed in recent years for unknown reasons. The area surrounding the crater can be found olivine, a mineral derived from the mantle, from which one can produce gems. Therefore, the olivine is also known as semi-precious stone.
