The Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (ISN) is the offical organization with aim for saving lives at sea and rivers areas of Portugal.
It was founded in 1892 under the patronage of Queen D. Amélia, as a private charitable entity under the name Real Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos.
Currently the ISN depends on the Portuguese Navy, through the Directorate General of Maritime Authority, while maintaining the essential objectives and tasks for which it was founded.
