The public alerting system was installed within three kilometres of Pickering Nuclear Generating Station as part of the detailed emergency planning zone close to the nuclear station.

The sirens will be activated if there was a severe accident at either the Pickering Nuclear Generation Station that could result in a release of radioactivity; the Province will order that the public alerting system be activated.
The sirens will sound continuously for three minutes and are designed that they will not damage hearing, no matter how close you are to the siren.
The sirens were installed in 2010 and to date have not been used to sound an alert.
