George Romney was a born in Mexico to Mormon missionaries and grew up in Utah. In 1939, he moved to Detroit where he joined the American Automobile Manufacturers Association. He was their spokesman during World War II. After the war, he joined American Motors Corporation. He served first as chairman then as CEO.

In 1962, Romney was elected Governor of Michigan. He was re-elected in 1964 and 1966. During his tenure, Michigan instituted state personal and corporate income taxes, passed civil rights legislation, and ushered in a new state constitution.

In 1968, Romney ran for the Republican nomination for President. Campaign gaffes, including stating he was brainwashed after returning from a visit of Vietnam, doomed his chances. Romney finished with the fifth most delegates at the convention. His name was placed for nomination for Vice President, but he lost on the first ballot to Spiro Agnew.

In 1969, Romney resigned as Governor of Michigan and was appointed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He reorganized the department. However, he had little influence within the Nixon Administration and resigned shortly after the 1972 election.

After his resignation, Romney exited politics and promoted volunteerism. He also served as a regional representative of the Mormon Church. He died on July 26, 1995.

Romney and his wife Lenore had 4 children. His youngest child is the former Governor of Massachusetts and Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
