The Longshaw Estate is situated on the moors above the town of Hathersage in the Peak District National Park.

The estate and hunting lodge was once the Duke of Rutland’s private shooting estate. It was purchased by public subscription in 1927 and presented to the National Trust.

The whole area has lots of walking paths, not only in the estate itself but also in the wider National Park.

Granby barn was converted a few years ago to act as an unmanned information centre with a variety of display boards. This orientation table is situated just outside the barn.

It shows the view looking away from Longshaw Estate up to the higher open moorland, with Higer Tor in the distance.

The table consists of a metal plaque affixed to a millstone. Millstones are the symbol of the Peak District National Park. They were made in this area for many years, literally being carved out of the local rocks.

You can still see many of them lying round the area. Some of them are complete, but never moved off site when the market collapsed after the introduction of the much harder carborundum.

In some cases the stones have been started to be carved from the rock but never finished. The local rock from which they were made is millstone grit, a form of sandstone.
Location / Access:
Next to Granby Barn at the entrance on the B6521. There is some parking available on the road. The way I got there was by walking from the Surprise View car park on the A6187 and following the hollowgate pack horse route which is shown on the orientation table.
