Clairborne Pell/Newport Bridge - Newport, RI, USA - Suspension Bridges on Waymarking.com

Between Newport, which is on Aquidneck Island (the original Rhode Island), and Jamestown on Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay, is a suspension bridge known as the Clairborne Pell or Newport Bridge. The bridge was dedicated to U.S. Senator Clairborne Pell in 1992, but the bridge is often still referred to as the Newport Bridge.

This bridge has the following facts in addition to the data below:

The bridge has four lanes - two each way. It is operated by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority. Tolls are $4 each way for non-residents, E-Z Pass Accepted.

The main span is 1601 feet (488 m) long, making it the longest spans in New England and about 70th in rank of the longest in the world. The towers reach 400 ft (122 m) above the water, while the road itself gets as high as 215 ft (66 m).

I traveled both ways on the bridge before logging the waymark on the east end of the entrance ramp to the bridge. It was a cloudy and misty day, so the bridge somewhat blends with the sky. Not uncommon weather in New England!
