The Cotaco Opera House was built in 1889 at 115 Johnston Street, which was during an era when there was a push to make an industrial powerhouse on the banks of the Tennessee River.

In later years, it became the Masonic Lodge, Masonic Theatre, the Payne Theatre and more. The older photo shows the building as the Payne Theatre.

These days, the building is home to the Carriage House Dress Shop, Mel Taylor Salon, Curry's Restaurant and others.

Inside on the first floor, there is a plaque denoting the building as a national historic gem.
Year photo was taken: circa 1900
