Holden started life as the Cedar Springs Fort, nicknamed Buttermilk Fort because of the refreshing drink that local farmers supplied for pioneer travelers through the area. It was an important stop on the route between Salt Lake City and the communities of southwestern Utah.

The townsite wasn't formerly surveyed until 1867 and in 1869 the name was changed to Holden in honor of a local citizen who died in a snowstorm in 1858.

Holden goes about its day-to-day business and largely ignores the traffic whizzing past on Interstate 15 just east of town.
