You are standing in a spot where on May 3, 1863, you would have been caught in the crossfire between the Union cannon over your right shoulder and Confederate artillery to your left. The fighting at Chancellorsville has reached a climax here at Hazel Grove-Fairview. Union General Hooker's army is trying hard to maintain their lines -- Williams to the left, Whipple and Birney to the right where the Fairview house is, Carr in front, and Geary behind you. But the Confederates are charging in from the woods and fields all around you and the cannon fire from Hazel Grove on the left is relentless.
On this day, the Federals were forced to withdraw leaving hundreds of casualties around your position.
The 'You Are Here' map is part of the High Drama, Human Tragedy historical display found at Stop 10 - Fairview of the driving tour or Stop 5 of the Hazel Grove-Fairview walking tour on the Chancellorsville Battlefield.
Chancellorsville is part of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park and is open dawn to dusk. There is no admission.
