This is an interpretive sign about the wildlife near the
Sunol Water Temple. The temple and nearby land is entrusted to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). The sign reads:
The Alameda Creek Watershed above Sunol drains an expanse or more the 600 square miles, from the slopes of Mt. Diablo, Black Mountain, and Mt. Hamilton to the valleys of Sunol and Livermore. The rolling grassland, native woodland, chaparral, and freshwater marsh habitats support a diversity of wildlife, ranging from the endangered Callippe silverspot butterfly, California red-legged frog, and western pond turtle to the bald eagle, black-tailed deer, tule elk, and mountain lion. The watershed is also home to a rich variety of native plants, such as the rare fragrant fritillary, forget-me-not popcorn flower, most beautiful jewelflower, and Diablo helianthella.
Today, the SFPUC protects the lands entrusted to its care, and the pure quality of its drinking water, through dedicated stewardship, including wildland fire risk management, habitat restoration and conservation, and preservation of native plants and wildlife.
