Located in the middle (literally) of Little River Canyon Parkway, is a natural rock formation known as Needle Rock and Needle Eye Rock. It is also called Mushroom Rock on various publications and online sites. The rock is shaped like a giant mushroom, but also has a “needle eye” at the bottom. In the surrounding area, erosion has formed expanses of unique rock formations, benches, rims and bluffs.
A popular, several decades old, story that circulates says that the road crew constructing the original scenic drive is credited with saving this canyon landmark. Plans called for the rock formation to be removed. Construction staff refused to blast it away and built the road around it instead. Thanks to the determination of the crew to leave the formation intact, this unique feature still exists in the preserve.
