The original brewery, which stood on this site since the 16th century, was purchased by Gerard Adriaan Heineken in 1867 and Heineken beer was brewed here until 1988. Nowadays Heineken is exported throughout the world and it is probably the world's best-known brand of Dutch beer.
In 1988, the first-ever Heineken Brewery finally closed its doors, nothing wrong with business, it simply wasn't large enough to meet demand. The original "Amsterdam Brouwerijen" was far too important to dispose of and has since been put to good use, re-opening as the highly enjoyable Heineken Experience
