There has been a church in Wicken Bonhunt since the 11th century. The chancel of the present church dates from the end of the 12th century, having original windows, piscine and sedilla. Around the early 18th century the tower collapsed. Major restoration work was undertaken in 1858-9 by John Sperling, the father of the then rector of the church. The nave and tower were rebuilt and the chancel restored at this time. The original restoration included a steeple, but that became dangerous and was removed in 1936.
