«In 1987, Starbucks iconic logo officially went green. Now, some 20 years later, its stores are following suit. Starbucks has been exploring "green" store design and construction since 2001, and the coffee giant turned to the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) LEED certification system. With a presence in more than 100 countries, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely recognized and accepted green building certification program globally. And for a global company like Starbucks, LEED only made sense.

There was one little problem, however. Back then, LEED certification applied to one building at a time, making it difficult and nearly impossible for retailers with a number of stores to participate. Instead of throwing in the "green" towel, Starbucks began working with the USGBC and other retailers to create a system to certify retail stores and store prototypes. Hence, the USGBC's LEED Volume Certification pilot was born.

The Volume Certificaiton would allow retailers such as Starbucks to pre-certify green stores at the design, construction and operational strategy level. In a November 2009 press release, Doug Gatlin, vice president of Market Development for the USGBC said "The Volume Certification program gives companies the tools to integrate LEED into their standard practices. Starbucks has significantly contributed to the development and refinement of this innovative program.”

Also in the same release, Starbucks announced it would "build or renovate a minimum of 10 pilot stores in six different bioregions around the world over the next six months." Well... it's five months later, and not a peep as to whether the pilot stores are in constrution or compele. The specialty coffee company did say it has secured the pilot store sites in the following markets:

San Diego, California
Seattle, Washington
Bellingham, Washington
Atlanta, Georgia
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
New York, New York
Toronto, Canada
Lisbon, Portugal
Dresden, Germany
Manila, Philippines
Fukuoka, Japan
Kyoto, Japan
