Luther Cemetery is located on Peebly Road, one-half mile north of Route 66 in the town of Luther.
As we travel to various cemeteries throughout the state, we notice so many homemade grave markers. In many cases it is obvious that, even with money in short supply, a family is attempting to honor their lost loved one, in a manner that will survive the test of time and remain for years as a testament to their love.
Often, the scene is sad as a family expresses their love in words and momentos, and the scratched-in names of their loved one. One particular headstone brought tears to our eyes when we saw a Father's plaintive words engraved in concrete: "We love you son."
This marker is a rectangular block of concrete, into which shells were pressed before it was set. The name "PHILLIPS" can be read. What we thought might possibly be words or dates, we now believe are circular indentations were smaller shells have worn away over the years. More than any other time, homemade markers bring home the truth that these were real people, with real pain, honoring their loved ones in the only way they could. It can be more heart-rending than a beautifully engraved granite stone.
