This is one of the pubs that takes a slightly different angle being called the Wellington Arms. Here we have his coat of arms and some serious embellishment surrounding it.

The Duke of Wellington is one of the best known and even recognised figures from British history pre-dating photography. Of course he is the man responsible for orchestrating the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte. He also went on to become Prime Minister.

How many pubs are there with the name The Arthur Wellesley, his given name? And before we get too jingoistic, we must take account of the roots of the man. He was born in Ireland.

The Iron Duke is named on more pub signs in the UK than any other person other than Lord Nelson.
