Pubs can come by the name "The Castle" in a couple of ways. This one has a ball as well.

Castles and for that matter balls were easy signs to illustrate and this MAY be an explanation for some of the instances throughout the country. However, there are other more satisfactory explanations.

Obviously, the proximity of a real castle would help. Alternatively, many coats of arms which also feature castles. In this case there is a Norman castle nearby, built on an ancient barrow. The addition of the ball? Well, the ball is sometimes used as a symbol of royalty.
