The port of Rotterdam was not only confronted with sailors, but also with the exotic seases they brought with them. The 19th-century Coolsingel hospital had a separate department for the sick seamen. In 1927 the Haven Hospital opened as an independent hospital. It was located in the old Continental Hotel. In 1937 the present building between Haringvliet Maasboulevard was opened.
