The carillon was installed in 1916 originally with 42 bells. Five additional bells were installed in 1957. In 1998 the carillon was restored for the Millennium celebrations and two additional bells were added. The largest of the bells is named St. Colman and weighs in at 3.6 tons and is the largest bell in Ireland. The carillon is played from a console in the belfry, consisting of a keyboard and a pedalboard. The playing is completely mechanical with no electrical assist.
There are concerts each Sunday afternoon at 4.30 p.m. from May to September. The concerts are occasionally performed by guest carillonneurs however most are preformed Adrian Gebruers KSG who celebrated his 40th year as the Cathedral Carillonneur in 2010.
