The octagon Water Tower was located behind the House of Providence (The Academy) in downtown Vancouver. The Academy, a three story brick masonry structure whose symmetry reflects Georgian inspiration, was completed in 1874 for a day and boarding school. At that time it was the largest brick building north of San Francisco. The Academy's eight-sided Water Tower was 60 feet high topped with a peaked shingle roof and a 12 inch ventilator. In 1969, when The Academy ceased to function as a school, its outer buildings including the octagon Water Tower and the seven acres were sold to the Hidden family, whose ancestor Lowell M. Hidden manufactured the bricks used to build the structure. Fire and time has leveled the once impressive water tower to less than half of its original height. The double hung windows were boarded up. Junk littered its interior. The Water Tower has been torn down and the octagon Water Tower will only be a memory.
