The Apothecary Garden is located on the northeast corner of W. Oklahoma Avenue and N. Second Street in downtown Guthrie. It is sponsored by the Oklahoma Pharmacy Heritage Foundation and the Frontier Drug Store Museum which stands just to the east. The Garden was completed and dedicated on May 18, 2006.
In 2007, as part of the Oklahoma Centennial celebration, a Centennial clock was placed in the garden. The area is a lovely, restful garden with paths and benches, and a small bubbling fountain. Planted throughout the area are shrubs, herbs and plants which are cultivated and studied for their medicinal value. Plants and herbs are labeled with their name and how they are used medicinally.
Plants have long been recognized for their medicinal properties. The Chinese studied and used them, as well as the Native Americans. The Benedictine Monasteries in the middle ages, however, were the first to plant gardens specifically for the study of plants' therapeutic effects.
On the north side of the garden is a brick pavilion where lectures and classes are sometimes held. There are also public rest rooms in this area. The museum and gardens are open Tues-Sat from 10-5. There is no admission fee, however, a suggested donation of $2.00 is appreciated for the inside museum.
