Narodil se nekdy kolem roku 1340 ve vsi Pomuku, který náležel nedalekému cisterciáckému klášteru pod Zelenou Horou. Poprvé doložen 20.6.1369 Jan z Pomuka, syn zemrelého Velflína, jako verejný notár v Praze. 20.3.1393 umírá na mucidlech, jeho telo bylo shozeno z mostu do Vltavy. 19.3.1729 prohlásil papež Benedikt Jana Nepomuckého za svatého.
