TThis object was sculpted by Edward Allington in 1998, and is influenced by the industrial heritage of the surrounding area.

It was made in sections and then bolted together to look like a machine. It is made of bronze and weighs over two tons. It is also a fountain, with water flowin out of the mouth of the vase. However it is quite often turned off.

It is in the market place in Ramsbottom and is just one of the sculptures in the Irwell Sculpture Trail. This trail stretches for 30 miles from Salford to the pennine moors above Bacup. It’s named after the main river that flows into the twin cities of Manchester and Salford from these moors.

The trail is the largest public art scheme in England. It originally had 28 sculptures on it. Currently it is being redeveloped in conjunction with the Arts Council North West. It will have a re-opening in 2011, and have links to other attractions in the area. The revised trail is also going to have links to GPS technology to allow interaction with the trail and sculptures.
