There was no visible information on the cannon or any plaque nearby indicating what it is. However, it does make a nice ornamentation for the Memorial Hall, which was erected as a memorial to soldiers who fell in Civil War. Since that time, the town hall also includes memorials to Townsend men and women who served in other wars.
