The Mission Cemetery on the northern point of the Te Papa peninsula contains around 200 graves. The location was chosen in 1838 by the missionaries at the nearby mission as a suitable place for a graveyard. The first burial was Ann Catherine Wilson, the wife of one of the missionaries, she died of breast cancer in November of that year. Also buried here are the Pakaha soldiers and sailors who fell at Gate Pa and Te Ranga as well as two chivalrous foes, Rawiri Puhirake and Hori Ngatai.

The sign on the gate reads:

Otamataha Pa
the
Burial Ground of the
Church Missionary Society
1835–1881
Also of the
Soldiers and Sailors who
fell in the Maori War
1864–65.
