The Great North Road was never designed as a major road between the north and London. However, over the years a variety of local routes became joined to form the route that we recognise now. This is one of those spots that Dick Turpin would have passed on his historic ride on Black Bess. Within a mile of here (at WMA1PT) is a modern road called "Turpin's Ride".
