The route was chosen in the 1960s, but it was not until 2003 that North Carolina finally finished the last nine mile section to run I-26 through the Appalachian Mountains at Sam's Gap. It replaced the old winding route for US Highway 23 across the Tennessee/North Carolina border, which was an extremely dangerous path during winter with sharp turns and limited guard rails. Bigger tractor trailers were banned on this route, but had to use I-40. For more history on the road project, check

This sign for Sams Gap can now be seen on I-26 overpass over the old route, now known as Flag Pond Road. The Applachian Trail, which runs along the TN/NC border here, also passed under this overpass.
The welcome signs for Tennessee can be barely seen in the background, while North Carolina was over the horizon. The welcome centers are located 3-6 miles away from the border.
