It started with a dozen or two covers. And a long-term care nurse turned full of a desire to help others, especially to know by heart the needs of patients never completely satisfied. His name is Guadalupe Jacinto. And the beginning of the project which attracted young and old for solidarity was as simple as this: "I was taking a degree and always brought food from home: a bottle of yoghurt, water bottle ... How could not walk with all garbage for recycling, at least kept the covers. " It was thus that in the trunk of a nurse began to live a few dozen small circles of plastic, "One day I began to look at the covers and thought, this should give money. And if I could add many, many caps and then sold them making money to be able to reverse the wheelchair? "

The idea was born in 2003. Without knowing it would work, Guadalupe Jacinto lay hands on. She spoke with colleagues at the Hospital Garcia de Orta in Almada, and asked them to start saving covers. Then he started to contact companies refuse collection to adhere to the idea. And failed. The Amarsul was the first system for collecting solid waste to support the project: "It was agreed that they would receive the caps, would send to recyclers and reserve the money to buy their orthopedic material." The nurse Guadalupe Jacinto determined from the outset, that money would never by yourself. "I do not want there to be any misunderstanding about my intentions."

Shortly after he launched the idea (and only a few posters scattered on the South Bank, where he lives), Guadeloupe was surprised by the proportion that the project had taken: "One day not long after he started this, I stopped at a gas station Santarém and saw my signs posted. Then I heard that they had reached the islands. And some teachers, individually, had placed the posters in schools and promoted competitions to see which class you could accumulate more caps. "
"Tou yes it's Cover Amiga?"
Phenomenon was launched. Young children, youth and adults began to spread the word. Here and there he began to talk about the strange collection. Many parents were made aware of the initiative by the repeated requests of the children: "Keep the covers!"

Aware that the creation exceeded the creator and unable to respond to all who sought the Hospital Garcia de Orta, Guadalupe Jacinto Association decided to create the Tampa Amiga. The website (www.tampinhas.org) gave account of every step of the process, and the names of persons who, in turn, were allied to the idea (schools, parish councils, fire departments, private companies, etc.. ) and were offering to receive and store the lids, then transporting them to the waste collection systems compliant. Today there are 243 delivery locations throughout the country.

Besides this information, Guadalupe Jacinto entered the site your mobile number so that interested parties could see that its doubts. Repented shortly afterwards: "You can not imagine what it was. I could not work! The calls were so many that I had to turn off the phone." And so it remains off, the phone whose number appears on the Internet: "If I call now, I was surprised because our conversation ended immediately. The people joined in this initiative so I get to feel frustrated because he could not give vent to all requests. "
Covers come in the mail

In 2004, the first campaign was able to collect 7.8 tons of covers, which yielded 16 wheelchair and an articulated bed. This year has already collected 8.12 tons, delivered over four chairs and are about to make several deliveries. But the idea spread to more people of Guadalupe and escaped from his control. There are orthopedic material to be delivered directly by the waste collection systems. So that neither she already knows how many people have benefited.
Still, it continues to be sought like a famous figure. Some people go to the Hospital Garcia de Orta in search of the mastermind behind the project, with bags of caps to give it or with desperate pleas for orthopedic materials: "They come around, come to me and say, oh lady nurse, give me a seat wheel, I need both! "
The advice that gives Guadeloupe who need orthotic is to combine with an institution: "We prefer to deliver the material to institutions. For we know that, so when the person no longer needs, the institution that channels material to another in need. Otherwise, we do not know what is done to wheelchairs when patients because of death or healing, no longer need them. "

To be able to respond to the "madness" of the covers, the Association needed an Amiga Tampa headquarters, most members and volunteers: "Without the association members can not walk. A lot of people to help many patients who need and I sincerely I feel lost. I do what I can, but I have my work and my son and another on the way. " The nurse has even asked the City Council of Seixal and Almada to yield a space with a line telefónic, "but so far have received no response."
The foot covers are so great that already started to give headaches. Ana Loureiro, Director of Communication, Image and Documentation Valorsul (a system of waste collection, Lisbon), praises the idea but points out some problems: "Sometimes we receive tons of covers and not even know if the recycler will buy. Covers are very small and are not made of a material alone. This, from the viewpoint of recycling, it's complicated. " Moreover, explains Ana Loureiro, which takes the value of the covers is ridiculous: "A load of eight tons each give 5000 euros. Can you imagine how many caps are needed to arrive at eight tons?"

But the headaches do not stop here, "arrive covers me in every way. Until I get them by mail! And then there are people who require wheelchairs go out to them, because they need more and because they delivered many covers . And yet there are those who keep the lid and the bottle on the floor. "
To combat the phenomenon, which surpassed all expectations, Valorsul is preparing a campaign to allocate money for social causes, not in exchange for caps, but a recycling done correctly.

The first phase ended in January 2007, having been gathered in the Algarve region covers approximately 29 tons of which were sent for recycling by ALGAR via Sociedade Ponto Verde, resulting in its recycling value of € 17,358.42, converting this value in orthopedic materials.
In the Municipality of Loulé were reunited in 2006, 14.440 tons of plastic covers, or nearly half the region's total. Between January and August 2007, Loulé contributed 4.080 tons.
