John Ronald Reuel Tolkien served as Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford from 1925 until 1945 when he wass named the Merton Chair of English in which he served until his retirement in 1959. The Hobbit was published in 1937 and The Lord of the Rings was published in 1954-55.
