Gen. Meade fought in the Seminole War, the Mexican-American War and was Union General best known for defeating Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg in 1863.
The plaque at this site reads:

BUILT THIS LIGHTHOUSE IN 1858.
DURING THE CIVIL WAR HE COMMANDED
THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC. FROM
