Its armour is impervious to most forms of battlefield attack. Of the 1,955 M1 tanks employed during the Persian Gulf War (1990-91) Russian T-72 rounds hit seven but the sustained no damage.

Powered by a Lycoming Textron AGT 1500 hp gas-turbine engine, the M1 operates on diesel or kerosene-based fuel, but it can run on gasoline in an emergency.
