The sign, produced by Alpha Signs of Debden Green, Saffron
Walden, is situated at the main crossroad in Bayford.
The sign depicts the local church, St Mary’s, and the war memorial that
stands in front of St Mary’s. At the top of the sign is the Baker family
coat of arms.
There is a plaque on the sign’s post which reads:-
[CROSS]
THE FIST MENTION OF A
CHURCH IN BAYFORD WAS
AS EARLY AS 1222
BUT THE PRESENT
CHURCH
DATES FROM 1871
[CREST]
THE ESTATE AND
VILLAGE OF
BAYFORD WAS IN THE
PRIVATE
OWNERSHIP OF THE
‘BAKER’
FAMILY FOR ALMOST 200
YEARS
(1759-1945) AND IT IS
THEIR
COAT OF ARMS THAT IS
DEPICTED
ON THIS SIGN.
The sign is relatively recent, having only been agreed at a
parish meeting of 23rd November 2009.
