Known as a Chalybeate spring, Irons Well is brightly coloured from the iron salts in the water. The waters were once used by the workers in the gunpowder factory nearby but they have long gone. Today the forest, gravel track passes by the spring which is surrounded by wooden railings.

It became known as Irons Well from about the late-18th century and appeared on the Richardson, King and Driver’s map of the New Forest. It is still shown by this name on modern maps.

Lazar House used to stand nearby where people suffering from leprosy used to rest whilst using the water for its curative properties. The water was also said to cure sore eyes, bad legs and other ailments.
