Pedro Álvares Cabral was a Portuguese noble, military commander, navigator, and explorer who set sail from Lisbon on March 9, 1500, and discovered Brazil on April 22, 1500. This monument was placed on March 9, 2000, as a tribute to the 500th anniversary of the onset of the explorer's journey that led to the discovery of Brazil.
