The pre-statehood Bank of Oologah was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 (#82003699).
In 1985, this building was restored and currently contains artifacts from the early days of the bank. It is open to the public six days a week.
Oologah was part of the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation. Coo-wee-scoo-wee is said to be a large white aquatic bird (possibly mythical) and some think the name sounds like a bird call.
Oologah is the birthplace of Will Rogers. Prior to statehood, it was often spelled Oolagah. Although the official spelling is now Oologah, some historic buildings still use the other spelling.
The historic brick buildings in downtown Oologah were built in the years preceding statehood in 1907. The bank restoration project inspired the rebirth of historic downtown Oologah. Other restorations have brought new life into several historic buildings.
