The Prague 1 voluntary firefighters´ unit on September 11, 2010 unveiled a small stone memorial with commemorative plaque in honour of 343 firemen and rescuers from the New York firefighter corps who perished during the terrorist attacks on the city on September 11, 2001.
The bilingual inscription on the plaque describes a fireman as a man who lives a double life, for himself and for the others. That is why a firefighter´s life is the right example of how to understand the human life, the plaque reads. It pays homage to the New York firemen who lost their lives while rescuing people from the World Trade Centre buildings attacked by terrorists with hijacked planes.
Before unveiling the plaque on the Kampa island, the Prague firefighters gathered outside the U.S. embassy. Their commanders handed over a commemorative letter to the U.S. cultural attache, David Gainer.
The Prague 1 firemen´s unit was established only this spring. It has 15 members and others plan to join it, according to its website. It writes that voluntary firemen´s units in Czech towns comprise over 70 000 people, who closely cooperate with professional firemen.
