This historical marker has a duplicate next to it and reads:
"PAULUS HOOK
WASHINGTON'S "FLYING CAMP"
HERE IN 1776. LATER FORT
HELD BY BRITISH DURING
ENTIRE WAR DESPITE
AMERICAN ATTACKS"
This area was once an island during high tides...and is located only 1 mile across the Hudson from New York City. This area was one of several forts that the Colonists built to surround and defend New York. After suffering defeats in New York, the Colonists abandoned this site...and the British took it over. But on August 19, 1779, Gen. George Washington ordered an attack in which the Americans captured 158 prisoners..but failed to retake the fort.
The two identical historical markers are located on each side of a tall obelisk which was erected in 1903. See the Wikipedia article for more information at (
