William Irwin was Cumbria’s foremost country fiddler, whose music influenced folk music far outside his own area. Much Irish and American folk music can be traced back to the influence of William Irwin.

William Irwin was born in Keswick, Cumberland, on November 3, 1822, where his father was a shoe-maker and baker. William was taught to play the fiddle by Gillespie, an eminent North Cumbrian fiddler.

From the age of 16 Irwin started playing at the inns of Cumbria. In 1844 he moved down from Keswick to Elterwater and established a playing career in Langdale, Grasmere, Ambleside and Hawkshead. Once established in Elterwater he played in the church band at Holy Trinity, where he is buried.

The spread of Irwin’s music from rural Cumbria is attributable to the area’s industrial past. Elterwater was a centre for gunpowder production, an industry which had worldwide connections.

As well as a player, Irwin also taught his musical craft. Among his pupils was the fiddler Henry Stables.
