This truly beautiful and unique structure stands today as the largest masonry structure ever built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was the young men of the Corps' Company 3464 that built this unsuspended bridge / dam for the impoundment of Byrd's Creek creating a 35 acre lake for recreation. To complete this task three thousand five hundred and fifty cubic yards of dirt and rock were excavated and 8,000 tons of concrete mixed and poured for the 319 foot span. The bridge is faced with the beautiful Crab Orchard stone, and colorful sandstone rock that is unique to this area and found in only one other part of the world. Seven spillways, rising 28 feet above the stream bed, carry the 18 foot roadway approximately 16 feet above water level. The Byrd Lake Bridge / Dam is the parks best known landmark.
