Billy Kwong opened in May 2000, in a narrow shopfront on cosmopolitan Crown Street in Surry Hills, Sydney.
It was inspired by the traditional Chinese eating house - hence it has low tables and chairs, pushed close together in a small setting. The kitchen is open to the restaurant so you can see the chefs at work.
The food is fresh and modern, using seasonal foods. The signature dish of crispy duck with oranges, mandarins or plums, depending upon the season- see picture.
The restaurant prides itself on the use of fair trade and organic goods.
According to Wikipedia:
Billy Kwong restaurant was the winner of the inaugural Sustainability Award in 2009 from the Sydney Morning Herald's Good Food Guide, in recognition of Kylie's environmental concerns, which includes diners being able to donate to renewable energy credits program, purchased from a wind farm in Hebei, a Chinese province. The restaurant only serves Sydney tap water through a filter as there is no bottled water.
