After activation on 20 October 1942, extensive training and maneuvers in Florida, and further training in Northern Ireland, the unit was moved by ship and by train to Wollaton Park in March 1944. The 508th saw action in northern France from D-Day, in Holland later in 1944, and then in the Ardennes. A total of 616 were Killed in Action, 1274 Wounded in Action, and 254 Missing in Action.
Wollaton Park was shared as a base camp with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

The memorial is a small obelisk set on a cube of marble, which bears the various inscription panels, on a plinth of four marble steps. The whole is set about by a paved area surrounded by a fenced area. It is adjacent to the parking area for the service ranges of Wollaton Hall.
