The Sitka spruce was cut in 1979 on Montague Island in Prince William Sound and was nearly 400 years old. The slab was originally on display at the Moose Pass Elementary School. At that time it was marked with historic events occurring during the life of the tree. In 2001 the slab was donated to the museum and the event markers have come off. The museum intends to refinish and relabel the slab.
