This places was originally thought to be a fons divona (divine fountain), hence the current name. The algae and fluorescent turquoise color of the water makes this one creepy looking place.
There are many legends associated with this water source that adds to its creepiness factor. One of the legends claims that La Fosse Dionne is bottomless and even now nobody knows where the bottom is. During a 1979 diving expedition a map was made to a depth of only 360 meters.
After several deaths, diving here was forbidden in 1996. Strong currents, lack of visibility, and very tight passages made this the most difficult cave dives in France.
In 1758 La Fosse Dionne was converted into a "Lavoire" (wash house)
