Madison County was first settled in 1724 a group of German Lutherans who founded the Hebron Lutheran Church, which is the oldest Lutheran Church in America. The county itself was first chartered in December of 1792 and the first log courthouse was built in 1793. The original log courthouse was replaced by the present courthouse which was built in 1829. The county was named for President James Madison and the Madison Family who owned property on the Rapidan River. This Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
