This is the first IKEA store opened in the Toronto area. For years, it was notorious for being simultaneously difficult to get to yet incredibly crowded. For most people, getting to the store required a left turn across a busy arterial road, and it was not unusual to have to wait through six or more cycles of the lights before being able to get through.

And it was this location that inspired satirical songwriter Nancy White to pen "Everything Turn To Rats**t in My Life" -- a classic blues number about the frustrations that can arise when the crowds get to be just too much. A sample lyric:

I hired a babysitter for the day
It took an hour to get there (and that's one way)
Then an hour to choose the bed I liked best
And an hour lined up to make my request.
Everything turn to rat**** in my life.

In the intervening years, the access roads have been improved so that the infamous left turn is no longer required for most people, and two other stores have opened in the Greater Toronto Area to relieve the overcrowding. Nowadays a trip to the North York IKEA can be a downright pleasant experience!
