This is one of a slew of pre-Victorian houses located at the beginning of Potter Street, near Kings Highway. This house is a beautiful example of early 19th century Haddonfield construction with the typical third floor dormers and late Federal style architecture. I was able to secure a picture of the house from 1936. I noticed in the original picture construction on the outer chimney was about to begin as scaffolding had already been erected. The house is located at 24 Potter Street.

I had an opportunity to talk to the lady who owns the neighboring house. She gave me some additional facts about the home. The lady who lives there is 83. She lived there when the 1936 picture was taken. Her father owned the house before she was born. To the rear of the house, there is a shed and on top of it is a beautiful bird house built by her father. The birdhouse, fixed and renovated a few times over the years is at least 75 years old.

The house is also a contributing structure to the Haddonfield Historic District. For a more detailed and informed physical description of this site, I have added information from the original nomination form sent to me by John P. Byrne, National Register Database Manager (John_Byrne@nps.gov), Department of the Interior. This narrative was created March 16, 1979, mailed in to Washington, D.C. and evaluated April 18, 1980 and finally approved on July 21, 1982. Thanks to this designation and the efforts of the community to stop developers in the early 70s, Haddonfield is permanently protected and is one of the best example of an intact Colonial America, this site one of its principal components.

Samuel Thackara House, built in 1820. 2½ story frame, corner posts with classic portico ornamented with dentils and grills on side. 4-light transom over a simple 2 vertical-paneled door. Two dormers in plain "A" roof, original three-panel shutters. Charming landscaped side and rear gardens, enclosed on the street side by a most distinctive white picket fence. One of the most charming houses of the Federal period in Haddonfield. --- National Register of Historic Places Inventory -- Haddonfield Historic District Nomination Form
