The Grand Canyon is one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the world. The canyon has been formed over the past 17 million years by the Colorado River as it gradually eroded away the rock. The width of the canyon at the rim ranges from 4 to 18 miles and is about 277 miles long. From the rim to the canyon floor is a little over a mile (about 6000 feet).

The most popular place to view the canyon is from the south rim which is within Grand Canyon National Park. The park was created in 1919 by President Theodore Roosevelt in order to protect the area from any future development. A large number of resources are available in the park, including lodging, restaurant and shopping facilities. Visitors can also make the very long hike to the bottom of the canyon where more lodging facilities are located.

The north rim of the canyon is 1000 feet higher in elevation, and is much more remote. Limited services are available, and that part of the park is only open from spring to autumn.

There aren't enough words to describe the beauty and awe that the canyon creates. It definitely should be very high on the list of places everyone should visit.
