This is what is written on the sign, word for word.

Andrew Ross, Headmaster Kangaroo Ground School, recorded in his diary having climbed the hill in 1852, equipped with a powerful telescope, he observed the "Marvel of the Age" the arrival in Port Phillip of the steam-powered Great Briton, direct from England.

John Allen, publican of the Kangaroo Ground Hotel, in 1887 advertised his establishment as being: " Within 5 minutes walk of that capital resort for pic-nic parties, the famous Garden Hill from the summit of which one of the most extensive and picturesque views in the colony can be seen".
